Tomorrow our A Grade side hosts league leaders Glengarry CC at Catterick Crescent, with the game starting at midday. On the day, a reunion to commemorate the Premiership’s Imperials won in the 1980’s will be occurring as well. Although we are honouring the Premiership players of the 1980’s, we would like to see as many past Imperials players on the day as possible. A presentation to the Premiership players will be made at 2:30 PM, but the past players are encouraged to get there earlier to catch some of our A Grade game. This will be followed by a breakfast at the Clubrooms on Sunday morning from 9:30 AM.
The 80’s were a golden period for Imps, with the Club winning their first Premiership of the decade by winning the A & B Grade Premiership’s in 1979/80. Imperials City as they were known then, followed that up with Premiership’s in A Grade in 1980/81, and 1981/82, winning a hat trick of Premierships. The A Grade then narrowly lost the 1982/83 Grand Final and won the 1983/84 Grand Final, meaning they were only a handful of runs away from winning five straight Premiership, a feat that has only been done once by Toongabbie CC in the 1960’s.
A rare event will occur in tomorrow’s A Grade game, with a father-son duo playing their first game of A Grade together. President Peter Dunstan and son Hunter will take the field together. Father-son’s playing together occurs reasonably regularly in the lower Grades, but rarely in A Grade. I remember playing with Luke Owen and Hayden Owen in A Grade about 2010, which is the last time I can recall this happening in Imps A Grade.
Our B Grade have a huge game versus Glen at Glen. We are currently a game clear in fourth spot from Glen, so a victory tomorrow will come close to guaranteeing a finals spot. Our C Grade are currently fifth, but only two points out of the four, but face a tough task in playing the top side in Ex Students tomorrow.
On Sunday, the Club will be hosting the Devils Draw, which is the Club’s major fundraiser. Tickets are $30, with only 15 tickets still available. Contact either Scott Aitken or Mel Aitken if you are after a ticket.
