Imperials CC 2021/22 Senior Presentation Night

27 Mar 2022 by Leigh Fabris

Thanks to all the players, partners and supporters who attended the Club’s Presentation Night last night. It was a fantastic night, well hosted by Club President Peter Dunstan. Here is a summary of the Awards given out last night.

The night started off with the C Grade Awards being presented by skipper Mick “The Finisher” McNulty. There were some amazing stats put out by the C Graders this season. Imps cult hero Daniel “Eggy” Morris might have copped some stick on the TDCA A Grade Grand Final broadcast recently, but taking 21 wickets in 44 overs is a great effort. If you’re taking a wicket every 13 balls bowled, then you’re going pretty well. Geoff Walker had a bowling average of 3.27, taking 11/43 off his 16 overs for the season. Amazingly, one of those 16 overs went for 19, so take that out and he’s averaging a touch over 2 per wicket.

Johnny Downs was rewarded for a great individual season, taking out the C Grade Batting Average and Aggregate, and also the C Grade Club Champion Award. On top of all that, he also opened the bowling each week, so had a fantastic season all round.

C Grade Awards

C Grade Bowling Aggregate – Daniel “Eggy” Morris. 21 wickets
C Grade Bowling Average – Geoff Walker. 11 wickets @ 3.27 runs
C Grade Batting Average & Aggregate – Johnny Downs. 289 runs @ 36.13
C Grade Captains Award – Prentice Stephens
C Grade Club Champion – Johnny Downs

The B Grade Awards were given out by President Peter Dunstan, who gave himself the Bowling Average & Aggregate Award. The immensely talented Josh Jennings made a few cameo appearances in B Grade, and won the Batting Average & Aggregate Award. But the B Grade Brian Symons Club Champion Award was the award that got punters up and about, with it going to another cult hero at Imps, Darren “9ers” Warwick.

It was an emotional 9ers who accepted the award, talking about how proud he was to accept the Award, given how much impact Brian Symons had on not only his cricket career, but life in general. Much like Eggy, 9ers is a much respected and loved player at Imps,

The A Grade Award were given out by skipper Ryan Morley, who is soon to jet off to England to play for Olacanian Cricket Club this off season. Witchy was awarded the Batting Average and Aggregate, and also made the TDCA Team of the Year, after making 245 runs @ 22.37 this season. Veteran Size took out the Bowling Average with 15 wickets @ 11.

But the rest of the A Grade Awards went to Rossy, taking out the Bowling Aggregate, the A Grade Ken McQualter Club Champion Award, and the Captains Award. This has been spoken about on numerous occasions, but it was a remarkable season for Rossy, stepping up from B Grade to A Grade when the Club needed him most, to him winning multiple Imps Awards, plus the TDCA A Grade Bowling Aggregate and a spot in the TDCA Team of the Year. There was more to come for Rossy however on the night.

Imps Players Player Award – Darren Warwick

The Players Player Award is an award voted on by the playing group to the player who puts in the most effort during training nights and also on game days, and it was no surprise that it was given to Darren Warwick, given how well respected he is among the playing group.

Eric Malone Best Clubman Award – Scott Aitken

In similar style to 9ers not being a surprise recipient of the Players Player Award, it was no surprise that Scott Aitken won his second consecutive Best Clubman Award, for his efforts on the Club’s Committee, but also his working behind the bar, and assisting with his wife Mel in organising the Club’s social events for the season.

Legend Status – Ross Williams

In recent years, the Club has inducted two former players, Brian Symons and Ken McQualter, to Legend status at Imperials, and last night the third player in Ross Williams was inducted for his tireless contributions to the Club both onfield and off field. This Award was given to Rossy by his father Alan “Pongo” Williams, a Life Member of the Imperials, as is his wife Di Williams, who was the first female awarded Life Membership at the Club.

This is a list of Rossy’s achievements at the Club on field, which doesn’t take into account the many hours spent on the Club’s roller, and behind the bar at the Club, as well as his eight seasons as Club President.

Made his Senior Imps debut in the 1992/93 season. Has made 5.925 Senior Club runs, which is the most of anyone over the last 30 seasons. Has made three Senior Imps centuries, one in A Grade (120 vs Centrals in 04/05), and two B Grade centuries, with a highest score of 140 vs Centrals. He has also passed 50 on 19 occasions.

Has taken 330 Senior Club wickets, which is the third most Club wickets over the last 30 seasons behind Size and Iceman. Has taken five wickets in an innings three times, with his best figures being 5/23 against Ex Students B Grade in 2012/13.
