Round 10 vs Toongabbie CC

30 Jan 2022 by Leigh Fabris

Yesterday we took on Toongabbie CC, with the A’s and C’s at Toon, and B’s at Catterick. We won the toss and batted first in the A’s, and got off to a great start thanks to Witchy and Size, who put on 74 for the opening partnership in quick time, before Witchy was dismissed for 42, with Size making 32.

For the second week in a row, Boyesy batted really well but was terribly unlucky, last week being run out for 18, this week doing a hamstring on his way to 24, and having to get Witchy back out as his runner. Ishan batted well for 21 and Scotty got a start with 12, and we got to 7/166 off our 50 overs, which was a defendable target, given the Toon outfield was slower than it normally is at this time of the year.

Toon got to 0/15 off four overs before the players went off for a lengthy rain delay. When play resumed, Scotty was able to get an early wicket to have Toon at 1/17. Toon then put on a 60 run partnership in pretty quick time, but some quality bowling from Rossy (3/27) and a wicket to Elmsy saw Toon go from 1/77 to 5/108, to swing the match in our favour. Toon then put on a 44 run partnership saw them pass the revised Duckworth Lewis target, giving them the win.

Despite the loss, it was another really competitive contest from the A’s, and with another breakthrough or two late in the game, could’ve easily won.

Given the rain on Friday night, it seemed long odds that there would be any cricket at Catterick, but unfortunately for the Imps bowlers, not only did Rossy and Wellsy get a wicket up, they provided an absolute belter, with Toon B Grade making an imposing 4/225 off their 45 overs, with Boschy, Ice and Dash all getting a wicket each, with Under 15 player Liam Bermingham taking the fourth wicket on his senior debut for the Club.

We fell a fair way short of the 226 target, making 94, with 9ers top scoring with 32, and Deano (16) and Boschy (13) the only other batsmen to get to double figures.

The C’s won the toss and chose to bat, which is generally bad news for the opposition. I got to the Village Green to see Jenno on 96 not out, hitting a pull short for four to bring up his century. Amazingly, given the large volume of runs he’s scored in the last 2-3 years, this is Jenno’s first century for Imps. I left soon after this to go to watch A Grade, and I left thinking that given Jenno bought his century up in the 21st over, that he was a chance to top the Imps highest score in A Grade, which is 204 by Ray Walters back in 2004, but Jenno was out soon after for 101.

From 7/152, the tail was able to wag thanks to Luke Hegarty (43), Mick McNulty (18, Jesse Sutherland (19 not out) and Prentice Stephens (21 not out) getting Imps to 9/260. Toon made 9/167 off their 40 overs. Almost everyone had a bowl, with Trent Paulet (2/14), Jesse Sutherland (3/15) and Eggy (2/27) being the multiple wicket takers, to win by 93 runs.
